Your exhortation to Dick Cheney to put a final period on his lifespan, as well as MW's view that the Dickster's cousin's middle initial should not be rounded out with a period have both led me to ponder these two harbingers of endings.

The Truman middle initial conundrum was addressed by the website of the Truman Little White House in Key West, Florida, when it stated that Truman actually had no middle name: "...His parents gave him the middle initial S to honor and please his grandfathers, Anderson Shipp Truman and Solomon Young. Since the S did not stand for a name, Harry didn’t use a period after it for most of his life. Soon after he was elected president, the editors of the Chicago Style Manual informed Truman that omitting a period after his middle initial was improper grammar and a bad example for America’s youth. From that moment on, the 33rd President signed his name Harry S. Truman or put all the letters in his name together as in HarrySTruman."

When I wrote my 1/24/17 Metablog comment, below, I noticed that both Wikipedia and The Truman Library and Museum website used the "S." version of his name, with Wikipedia additionally reproducing an image of Truman's actual signature with the period. Far from wanting to set a bad example for America's youth, I decided to put the period in because to me his name looked unfinished without it.

And as for Dick Cheney, I'd like nothing more than to see him use that silver stake to put a final stop on his imperfectly beating heart in no uncertain terms. Period.

Oh, so many of us could all be distant cousins of famous people, although I didn't know Truman was from Kenya (Just kidding. BTW, there is no period after the S in "Harry S Truman" because the S does not stand for anything).

At least Reagan and then the Bushes allowed public school lunches. I am sure, under Trump, and Betsy DeVos (if she unfortunately gets confirmed secy of education) free or cheap lunches in the schools will come to a screeching halt. My guess is that DeVos will push for swank expensive restaurants in the schools which only the rich kids can afford.

Can it possibly be true, as Wikipedia reports, that Dick Cheney is a distant cousin of both Harry S. Truman and Barack Obama? -- when deep down in my heart, despite significant proof to the contrary, I know that blood-sucking lip-curler was responsible for advising Ronald Reagan that ketchup was a vegetable in school lunch programs . . . .
