I live off a narrow stretch of road where cars park randomly on both sides. Drivers can't make any assumptions about right of way, so one is forced to proceed slowly, make eye contact with oncoming drivers, and decide who can go first.

When parking restrictions were proposed to speed up the traffic, a resident wrote to the paper expressing her hope that they would not go ahead, as "it would be a shame to lose the smiling and waving".
