I have just survived a disciplinary hearing convened because a student complained that I would take points off if she used "they" to refer to herself. This student identifies herself as an LGBTFQ ally, and she was deeply hurt by my grading standards. Another student, who identifies as an LGBTQ person, dropped my course for the same reason.

I add to my emails these words: Any third-person singular pronoun you like.
