Liked it, too, and it does pick up towards the end, and I did feel it was worth reading despite the ending and despite the fact that James does seem to be what one critic described as a rhinocerous trying to stick its nose into a corner of a room.

Another work of his that I like is the much shorter "Turn of the Screw," which should give the reader more goosebumps once he realizes that the point of view that James uses gives this story an extra, eerie twist.
